What is a Coral and Why Are Coral Reefs Important
Corals are living animals, tiny polyps that join together to form colonies that may take decades or even centuries to grow. Their partnership with algae called zooxanthellae allows them to build the lively reefs structures we know today.
Healthy coral reefs are the foundation of life in tropical oceans.
Although coral cover barely 1% of the ocean, they support 25% of all marine species, protect coastlines by absorbing wave energy, and support millions of people through fisheries, tourism, and coastal livelihoods. But these ecosystems are in trouble.
Today, global coral reef ecosystems are threatened.
More than half of the world’s coral reefs have vanished in just 70 years due to destructive fishing methods, rising ocean temperatures, pollution, ocean acidification, and unsustainable tourism.
Protecting and restoring coral reefs has never been more urgent.

Lipah Beach Coral Reef Restoration Project
To date, 10,356 corals have been outplanted in Lipah from the coral nursery back onto the natural reef or artificial reef structures.
Established in 2016, this coral restoration site in Amed was seeded with fragments from the Ocean Gardener nursery in Candidasa and corals of opportunity.
Since then, Ocean Gardener has developed 2 coral nurseries in Lipah, one at 6 meters and one at 16 meters, cultivating a diverse range of 54 coral species at this restoration site.

How Coral Restoration Works
Coral reef restoration uses the coral’s natural ability to reproduce asexually. Coral fragments are grown in nurseries, where species are carefully selected for local conditions and restoration site biodiversity.
Once mature, these coral fragments are harvested from the nurseries and transplanted using artificial frames, ropes, or direct out-planting on the wild reef depending on the habitat, substrate and appropriate methodology specific to each restoration site.
Those coral reef restoration sustainable method, refined through Ocean Gardener’s 25 years of experience, helps degraded reefs recover faster and with stronger biodiversity.
